Video Gambling â⬠Confessions of an Addict
Video Gambling ââ¬â Confessions of an Addict Free Online Research Papers Video Gambling Confessions of an Addict Some people associate gambling as a means of enjoyment or social interaction. But at one point in my life it became an addiction. The fun stopped and the problems began, but oddly enough while it was happening I didnt know the moment the switch occurred. I was introduced to gambling at the age of 23 while working at a small restaurant on the northwest part of town. It was a slow time of day and there were three video lottery machines in a small room in the corner of the restaurant. The entire staff would play the machines during the slow times throughout the day and I never thought much about it. They would spend their tip money in hopes that they would win it big with nothing more than a spare change left behind by patrons. One day I decided to drop a quarter into the machine myself and take a run with my luck. The game Keno looked pretty interesting to me so I picked ten numbers and hit start. Before I knew it I was racking up credits, 500 to be exact. I couldnââ¬â¢t believe it, I had just won $125.00 and it was my first time playing any kind of game of this kind. I was on top of the world and experiencing what I would later understand to be a gamblers high. On my way home from work I passed a couple of casinos, they had always been there but I never really noticed them before. With gamblers high still pumping in my veins I decided to stop and try my luck again. My line of thinking was that if I only took in $20.00, I could only lose $20.00. However, if there such a thing as beginners luck, I am sure had it. By the time I left the casino that night I was another $350.00 richer and laughing to myself about how I could quit my job to play professionally. As a result of my ââ¬Å"beginners luckâ⬠I became a gambler full and true. First only taking in $20.00 or $40.00 at a time, but before long it was $100.00 or $150.00 in sad attempts to gain back what I lost the night before. I was having some personal problems at the time and going to the casino was a good way for me to keep my mind off all the problems at home. Perhaps I was trying to find an escape, or maybe that is just the excuse that all addicts use. Now a few years later, I was about to have a baby. My gambling came to a halt during this period. I had other things to keep my mind busy, so I didnââ¬â¢t need it at the time. There was about a two year period where I didnt gamble at all, in fact, I didnt really think much about it. However, once things on the home front began to worsen again, I immediately started looking for something else to consume my thoughts. I was on the verge of hitting bottom and I didnt have a clue. With a new born baby at home and never knowing where my boyfriend was, I felt lonely and depressed. I sought comfort in the casinos and began to hit the machines again. It was just like old times. I can remember going into the casino with $100.00 and my ATM card in hand. It was warm and inviting, like an old friend welcoming me back with a big hug. I never needed my ATM card that day as I had hit the big one with my last $20.00. One thousand dollars, I couldnââ¬â¢t believe it. That was more money then I would make working at the restaurant in two weeks and here I won it while having free drinks handed to me. Being the gambler I had turned into it was not enough to just win $1000.00. I immediately took $300.00 to another machine and began feeding in my winnings one quarter at a time. However, I guess I had the touch that day for sure; I won another $1000.00 almost immediately. I was hooked and everything in me was telling me that what I was doing was right. If I hadnt of won I dont know that my gambling would have gotten so out of control. I began gambling daily, sometimes all day long and far into the night. I would skip work to go to the casino. Gambling became a big part of my life. I would pass on sleep to gamble, I didnââ¬â¢t eat as the high of gambling kept me from thinking about food. My relationships suffered as suddenly I didnââ¬â¢t have the time to talk with old friends on the phone or participate in the lives of my family. I would be very irritable with my young son after a loss. The only thing I thought about was sitting at those machines with a beer in one hand and money in the other. Pay days were the worst; I would drop $600.00 in one day. This only led me to lie to my family and friends so I could borrow money from them to feed my son, or even worse, to just gamble it away. My family life was fading away from me and the people around me knew there was a problem. It was only about two months ago when I lost it big. I received my income tax refund, and with in a week it was gone. I lost nearly $2500.00 to video lottery. It was at this moment that I realized that I desperately needed help. I was very scared to tell everyone what was going, especially my boyfriend. How could I explain what I was doing and where all the money was going? After many long conversations and much heart ache my boyfriend decided to forgive me. He told me that he would be there for me and that we would get through it together. This is exactly what I think was missing in my life to begin with. Someone to open up to and talk to about my problem, and thankfully he was there for me when I needed him the most. It has been only two months since I came clean and I have vowed not to have video lottery in my life. Each day still comes with its own challenges but I have enrolled in school, and spend much of my time playing with my kids. Ever since video lottery took over my life 5 years ago, I have not had a lot of time for my family. To see the difference in my family life is what is keeping me going. The smiles on the faces of my children and to have them know that everyday there will be a good supper on the table is so magical. Franklin D Roosevelt biography and Presidential Courage Essay
Franklin D Roosevelt biography and Presidential Courage - Essay Example Rooseveltââ¬â¢s presidency and character are marked by a strong sense of morality and courage. Born on January 30, 1882, Roosevelt was born to his fatherââ¬â¢s second wife, Sara Delano who came from a prominent family as were the Rooseveltââ¬â¢s who were wealthy for multiple generations. His father was 51 at the time of his birth while his mother was only 28. Though prominent families typically left the care of their children to nannies and nurses, Sara preferred to raise Franklin herself. ââ¬Å"Sara was determined to raise Franklin as a Delano, which meant to raise him as she had been raised under the benign discipline of her father.â⬠(Smith, 49). During the earlier part of his life, his education was through the efforts of governesses and tutors as his parents would not send him to public school. ââ¬Å"One of the most gifted tutors was a young Swiss woman names Jeanne Rosat-Sandoz, who, in addition to drilling Franklin in modern languages, attempted to instill a se nse of social responsibility.â⬠(Smith, 50). It was important to her to develop him as both a person and a scholar. She ââ¬Å"believed in social reform and the Social Gospel; she did her utmost to arouse in FDR a social concern for those less fortunate.â⬠(Smith, 50). ... of travel in his childhood and his parents knew the Cleveland family and so FDR grew up having been to the White House and meeting people in Congress and whose. At age 14, he went to the prestigious Groton School where he was educated in the traditional classic style and did average in school but well enough to enter Harvard University where he also spent time working for the Harvard Newspaper and eventually become editor. Though he did not have extensive dating experience, during this time he began dating and against the wishes of especially his mother, he became determined to marry his fifth cousin, Anna Eleanor Roosevelt. She was raised in one of the less fortunate branches of the family but he did marry her in 1905 and shortly after he started at Columbia University Law School. Though FDR was a competent enough scholar, school was never a priority for him. He passed the bar exam but never completed his degree. He had difficulty in law school but seemed unconcerned. ââ¬Å"FDRâ⠬â¢s attitude toward law school was similar to Ulysses S. Grantââ¬â¢s view of West Point: it was a hurdle but should not be taken too seriously.â⬠(Smith,96). His ability to face these challenges in life was an example of how he would handle challenges later in his presidency as he would not be stressed or overwhelmed by the situations he would face. ââ¬Å"That was a trait he would hone to an art form in public life. ââ¬ËIf something was unpleasant and he didnââ¬â¢t want to know about it, he just ignored it and never talked about it,ââ¬â¢ said Eleanor. ââ¬ËI think he always thought that if you ignore a thing long enough it would settle itself.ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (Smith, 101). However, his college experiences did also help develop his leadership skills which would be key in his presidency. Leadership developed early

Discussion Replies - Essay Example l powers cannot exist without seeking another military tool that would keep the political and military balance of power in the world sustained as it is. Better still, is the observation that absent the nuclear threat, large army building would be the next strategy for the world powers. The relevance of the argument that nuclear weapons are not irrelevant because they are the weapons against themselves is an interesting but very accurate observation. Nuclear weapons are the weapons against nuclear weapons, due to the fact that they deter any country from using them, since retaliation with the same weapons would destroy the world. Additionally, the observation that nuclear weapons in the world exists only as a deterrence is plausible, owing to the fact that there is no victory that would be achieved through the use of nuclear weapons, as the whole population would already be destroyed. It is also true that with the nuclear weapons eliminated, the new war technology would turn to the use of drones for

Technology has changed our lives in ways that we only imagined in our dreams. Imagine a high quality and flexible display that is simple and low cost. Television or computer screens the size of a wall, but only as thin as a sheet of plastic. With colors so bright and vibrant you will feel like your right in the action whether you?re watching your favorite movie or playing your favorite computer game. Sound very unlikely with today?s bulky, heavy, and power hungry Cathode Ray Tubes many times referred to as CRT?s. They are in our TV?s and computers giving off radiation and eating up our hard earn money. They have become so abundant and easy to manufacture that you can obtain a decent sized computer monitor for less than $100. We?ve tried those sleek and stylish LCD and Plasma screens, but when you look at one you see something missing. Something you could only see in a nice bright and clear CRT display. LCD?s have improved greatly since their first appearance in the large screen disp lay area, but there is only so much that can be done. Plasmas are great also, but they are highly complex and expensive. They suffer from poor brightness and picture quality (zdnet.com). There is a technology being developed in research labs around the world that could change all this (Ibm.com). It?s called an OLED display, and it could truly change the way we look at technology. OLED stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode, sometime they are referred to as Organic Light Emitting Devices. OLED?s are made from an organic material that has luminescent properties that glows when voltage passes through it. They operate on the principle of converting electrical energy into light, a phenomenon known as electro luminescence. The basic construction of a single OLED consists of an organic material or a combination of organic materials between to metallic electrodes on a plate of glass. At least one of the metals needs to be transparent in order to observe the light that is emitted. Indium-tin-oxide is a metallic substance that is both conductive and transparent; the other metal can be reflective or also transparent depending on the intended use of the display. The electrodes are then connected to a voltage source. When current is supplied the organic material?s atoms react with the electric energy and emits energy in the form of light that may have a tinge depending o n the organic material used.

Human Papilloma Virus in Teens Essay
Teenagers in the United States are becoming sexually active at an earlier age and have more exposure to sexually transmitted diseases. Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is one of the leading causes of sexually transmitted diseases in the United States (Center for Disease Control, 2012), and the age group with the highest prevalence of HPV are teenagers. With the growing number of teenagers exposed to HPV, the incidence of cervical cancer is increasing in the US. The study of epidemiology focuses on the interventions and preventions available to decrease the prevalence and incidence of HPV, cervical cancer, and genital warts in teenagers. This paper will evaluate the role of epidemiology in HPV by utilizing the epidemiological triangle, methods and types of epidemiology, the population affected, and the levels of prevention in the HPV disease. ââ¬Å"Epidemiology is the study of populations in order to: monitor the health of the population, understand the determinants of health and disease of communities, and investigate and evaluate interventions to prevent disease and maintain healthâ⬠(Stanhope & Lancaster, 2008). Epidemiology is a science that includes both infectious and chronic diseases and influences clinical medicine and public health through research. Epidemiology focuses on evidence-based practice and the outcomes are utilized to guide a change in practice. The influence of the research is community wide and focuses on the services provided in the community. The purpose of epidemiology is to find the causes of disease, the prevention of morbidity and mortality, and to predict the occurrence of disease in the populations at risk. Nurses use epidemiology as a data tool in designing, implementing, and evaluating the health problems in the community (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2008). Human Papilloma virus is the primary cause of sexually transmitted disease among teenagers and can result in co-morbidity such as cervical cancer and genital warts. Research has indicated that the vaccines available are effective in the prevention of cervical cancer and genital warts caused by HPV. HPV in teens can be affected by lack of education about safe sex practices, and the lack of access to healthcare facilities executing medical screening. Legal consideration involving vaccine administration, in the state of Tennessee, is parental consent. The public health nurse can play a role in the community by advocating and communicating with government officials for the vaccine to be required for entrance into school. Primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention have significant implications towards HPV management, cervical cancer, and genital warts. Prevention of HPV through education, screening, and vaccinations is the most effective technique to decrease the prevalence and incidence cervical cancer, and genital warts in teenagers.

The Idea Of A `` Gamesman `` - 881 Words
The idea of a ââ¬Å"gamesmanâ⬠is a new concept for me, not that the concept is new to me, but rather that there is a term to describe this act. The idea of getting to the top by any means necessary is an ideal I am very familiar with. Itââ¬â¢s something that Iââ¬â¢ve discussed at length with my peers. There are numerous quotes about doing whatever is needed to succeed. In the world of business, it is a tactic that many people are comfortable with using. Maccoby describes the ââ¬Å"gamesmanâ⬠at the end of his life as a lonely entity with nothing to his name, but I do not believe that is the case. One of my favorite basketball players Michael Jordan had a quote that went something like ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve missed and lost and failed over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.â⬠Iââ¬â¢m sure many people have heard of this quote. The mere idea that Maccoby suggests, that most gamesman end up being frail old failures is an extremely defeatist ideal in my opinion. In the climb towards success there are struggles and defeats that people must overcome in order to rise up, but Maccobyââ¬â¢s idea that people who engage in ââ¬Å"no-holds-barred fights to get to the top are often rewarded with loneliness irks me. In the chase for success, for every successful person who has tried to thrive by doing whatever it takes there are countless who have failed by such tactics, but everyone isnââ¬â¢t going to stop doing so. The only people who become lonely and void of relationships are the people who have accepted their defeatShow MoreRelatedCharacter Analysis Of Dom Cobb ( Played By Leonardo Dicaprio ) Is Not Your Normal Thief1122 Words à |à 5 Pageswork of art.
